From work experience to the start of a career: Amy-Jay Walker, Administrator
Back in 2017, Amy-Jay Walker was 16 years old and looking for a week’s work experience as part of her Year 10 studies. Her father Steve and stepmother Amanda, both long-serving members of the Liniar team, asked if she’d be able to join the Marketing department for a week, to explore whether it could be a possible career choice for Amy-Jay.
The team welcomed Amy-Jay, over the course of the week showing her lots of different aspects of marketing including planning, design, copywriting, photography, video editing, website, social media and database management.
Amy-Jay commented at the time, “I have really enjoyed my week at Liniar and learning all about marketing – before this week, I knew very little about what it was and what it involves.”
Fast forward 3 years to September 2020 – Amy-Jay had been one of the students unable to sit A Level exams due to the pandemic and had been looking for an apprenticeship in order to start her career. The job market was unstable, with few opportunities for young people at this time - however Liniar happened to be looking for a temporary Administrator to scan delivery notes and keep on top of customer filing.
Having seen first-hand that Liniar was the sort of company she’d like to work for, Amy-Jay was engaged on a three-month contract, originally intending for this to tide her over and gain more work experience until she found an apprenticeship.
After Christmas, Amy-Jay was happy when the temporary contract was extended for a further few months, as she was enjoying the work and had started to take on more tasks, learning new skills and adding value to the business.
Another few months later and Liniar offered Amy-Jay a permanent role, covering a wide range of office duties, which keeps the role varied. As an Administrator working closely with Liniar’s vast warehouse, Amy-Jay was flexible with her approach to working hours and now works Sundays, with a day off in the week – and she loves it!
Amy-Jay comments, “I never really had a career path mapped out, so taking the temp job was ideal – it enabled me to get some real experience in an office environment, which I discovered I enjoyed. I like the fact the work is varied, too – it keeps things interesting and no two days are ever the same!
“My initial work experience allowed me to form a good opinion of Liniar, its people and its culture. I love the fact we have such a focus on helping our community – there are always projects underway to help those less fortunate – and everyone here is happy to share their knowledge and expertise to help you understand the wider context of what your own job means.
“I also know that as Liniar is a large company that’s still growing, there will be opportunities for me to progress and develop, so I can see plenty of career options opening up for me here.”
